    • According to most accounts, her (Jacobina Mentz) paternal grandfather, João Libório Mentz, brought his wife and children to Brazil in order to escape religous persecution in his home city of Tambach. The Mentzes had been part of a small faction that had split off from the Lutheran church in the region; much as the Muckers did decades later in the New World, these German schismatics, labeled "Anabaptists" by the anti-Mucker journalists in Rio Grande do Sul, undertook the schooling of their children and the celebration of baptisms and other religious sacraments in their homes and meeting places. [7]

      A 1º de fevereiro de 1799, 6 homens, que haviam brigado por quase 10 anos
      por causa da antiga doutrina e que, por isso, não participavam de qualquer culto
      e santa ceia, compareceram perante o Supremo Consistório Ducal (Gotha) e
      foram condenados a abjurar a antiga doutrina e a desistir de se apresentar como
      separatistas ou a desistir de seu pátrio direito e a emigrar. Optaram pelo último
      e depois de haverem vendido seus imóveis, emigraram a 16 de abril de 1799
      para Sternberg, no território de Würzburg.
